Where should I be looking for roles right now?
We always suggest starting with our own jobs board, but you can also check Charity Job, Guardian Jobs, and sites run by membership bodies like the Chartered Institute of Fundraising or CharityComms.
What if your role has been really niche and you’re struggling to find your next step?
You’re not alone. If the most obvious next steps come with a pay cut or don’t feel like the right fit, try looking for organisations where there might be space to grow. A role that’s slightly more junior but offers development opportunities could be worth considering.
How can you get a sense of an organisation’s culture before applying?
We always try to give a feel for this in our job ads, and our consultants are happy to chat about it too. You can also look up people who work there on LinkedIn or other platforms to see what they’re saying about their experiences.
What if the job ad doesn’t include a salary?
It’s frustrating, but unfortunately still sometimes happens in the sector. Our advice is to ask. We always insist on salary transparency with our clients because it helps create fairer processes and avoids pay gaps. We dont work on roles that do not publicly disclose a salary.
Not getting interviews even though you’re meeting the person spec?
It might be worth checking a few things. Are you using the same language as the job ad? Have you included a summary at the start of your CV or supporting statement that explains why this role makes sense for you? And are you focusing on what you achieved in each role, not just what you did?
Short word counts in applications?
Think about examples that cover more than one requirement and leave simpler things (like software experience) for your CV. Keep your answers specific and focused.
Should you mention lived experience if it’s part of what’s drawing you to a role?
Absolutely. Include it in your CV summary or supporting statement and explain how it connects to the organisation’s mission or the work they do.
