Building the inaugural lay trustee board for a new medical College – College of Intensive Care Medicine
Client
College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) — transitioning from the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) to an independent charitable company (from July 2026), with approximately 5,000 members across multi-professional disciplines.
Brief
Recruit three lay trustees — Communications, Finance/Treasurer, and Legal — for CICM’s inaugural Board of Trustees, establishing a governance foundation for the College’s transition.
Context
CICM will become a separate charitable company on 1 July 2026, having previously been hosted by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA). This transition requires strengthened governance, diversified skills on the trustee board, and strategic oversight across finance, legal compliance, and communications.
CICM’s strategic aims include improving patient care, supporting the intensive care workforce, shaping national policy, and ensuring long-term sustainability.
The Finance Trustee will additionally serve as CICM’s first College Treasurer.
What We Did
1. Role design and positioning
Created clear, inclusive and governance-focused role descriptions for all three trustee positions, emphasising independence, scrutiny, values alignment, and CICM’s strategic journey.
2. Market mapping and outreach
A multi-channel sourcing strategy included Guardian Jobs, CharityJob, Charity People channels, LinkedIn Jobs and specialist networks. This produced 26 direct expressions of interest, over 1,400 additional LinkedIn views and 34 extra EOIs, and more than 580 prospective candidates identified across the three roles.
3. Candidate engagement via webinar
39 candidates registered, 23 attended, and 11 attendees submitted applications afterward.
4. Application outcomes (combined total)
A total of 18 formal applications were received across all three roles.
Outcomes
The campaign generated engagement from over 640 individuals across all attraction channels, webinar participation, and targeted outreach. Candidate quality and seniority reflected strong alignment with CICM’s governance needs and mission.
The 18 applicants represented a mix of senior finance, legal and communications professionals across charity, health, membership and corporate sectors.
Jane Gizbert was appointed as the Communications Trustee
Bryan Hislop was appointed as the Legal Trustee
Kris Murali was appointed as the Treasurer
EDI Impact
CICM’s positive action measures were fully integrated, including anonymised shortlisting, tie-breaker provisions and guaranteed interview opportunities for candidates with protected characteristics who met essential criteria. This ensured a fair, bias-aware and accessible process, with multi-format submission routes and proactive reasonable adjustments.
Why This Worked
- Clear and compelling narrative about CICM’s transition and governance ambitions
- Senior-level attraction through targeted outreach and trusted networks
- Strong EDI foundations enhancing fairness and breadth of field
- Effective candidate engagement generating high conversion from webinar to applications
