Burgh House is a Grade I listed Queen Anne house in the heart of Hampstead Village, operating as an independent, self‑funding arts and heritage centre welcoming more than 75,000 visitors each year. With a vibrant programme of exhibitions, music, heritage events and community activity, and over 200 public and private events annually, the organisation plays a central role in the cultural life of North London and the local community.

As an Arts Council England Accredited Museum, Burgh House balances the stewardship of a historic building with the commercial and creative demands of operating a multifunctional arts and events venue. At a pivotal moment in its growth trajectory and with an ambition to strengthen financial sustainability and diversify audiences, the incoming Director would be responsible for leading the organisation into its next era of development.

Our Approach

In response to the brief to appoint a new Director, we delivered a focused and targeted search designed to attract candidates with a blend of strategic leadership, operational expertise and deep commitment to arts, culture and community engagement.

Our campaign highlighted the unique opportunity to lead a historic venue with significant local relevance, as well as the need for strong commercial acumen to support the House’s self‑funding model. Alongside strategic networking across the heritage, arts and charity sectors, we promoted the role widely to ensure a diverse and inclusive pool of applicants.

We placed particular emphasis on candidates with experience in fundraising, business planning, team leadership and stakeholder engagement, as well as those who could steward the historic building and sustain long‑term community relationships.

Outcomes

The search culminated in the appointment of Moira Lascelles, who will begin in post in April. Moira brings significant leadership experience across the cultural and heritage sector, with a strong background in organisational development, partnership building and programme delivery. Her appointment positions Burgh House to strengthen its artistic ambition, deepen community reach and enhance long‑term financial resilience.

Moira’s appointment ensures Burgh House has the strategic leadership required to steward a historic site while developing an imaginative and inclusive cultural programme. Her expertise aligns directly with the charity’s priorities around financial sustainability, fundraising, visitor engagement and community impact.

With a committed Board, dedicated staff and volunteer team and a new Director in place, Burgh House is well positioned to shape a new chapter in its history, expand its influence within London’s cultural landscape and continue providing an accessible, inspiring space for all.
